13 Free BeBoxen
Posted: 21-Jan-2008
Former Be Inc employee Michael Alderete recently
offloaded 13 BeBoxen at the
Vintage Computer Festival in
Mountain View. The price? FREE. I'm guessing a few USA-based readers might be
kicking themselves about missed opportunities ...
The back story to this is that Michael picked up a heap of BeBoxen in various
states of completeness at the Be
Inc liquidation auction back in early 2002. Despite the best of intentions,
Michael never did find the time to refurbish them.
Several deadlines for
progress were set by Michael's wife, but sadly Michael was just too busy with
other things to complete his refurbishments. So, off to the Vintage Computer
Festival they went.
Michael reports:
I spent a bit of time creating a flyer to advertise them, and packed up a kit
with stapler, tape, marker, etc., so that I could put them up in good places.
Then I drove 45 minutes to the Computer History Museum, where the festival was
taking place.
The second person who saw the flyer said, “OK, I’ll take them.” I hadn’t even
posted it yet! After 10 minutes of transferring from my car to his truck, the
BeBoxes had a new home, and better prospects for being refurbished and restored
to their former, if not glory, at least functionality.
